CREST

Collaborative Research in Engineering, Science and Technology (CREST) is the brainchild of a group of passionate people representing the interest of 3 key stakeholders of Malaysia’s E&E Industry — the Industry itself, the Academia, and the Government.

Launched in 2012, CREST was formed to address Malaysia’s E&E needs for:

AN INDUSTRY-LED ORGANISATION to drive R&D innovation

A PLATFORM FOR LOCAL & MNC COMPANIES to form a formidable R&D ecosystem

A sustainable pipeline for INDUSTRY-READY GRADUATES

Currently located in Penang, the CREST office is within 20km radius of at least 3,000 researchers. Inline with the country’s Economic Transformation Programme (ETP), CREST will accelerate economic growth by being the platform for Industry and Academia to collaborate in research, design and development activities.

The Great Lab (TGL) is an innovation challenge for all Malaysian students, in local and abroad universities from any discipline and year of study, to have the opportunity to develop their own ideas into Proof of Concept (PoC) by solving specific industry problems and challenges during their internship period. These industry problems and challenges are also made available for students to pursue their design projects, final year projects and even postgraduate research (MSc or PhD).

Background

As one of CREST talent initiative, The Great Lab (TGL) was officially launched on March 2014. TGL was originally a student-led initiative to create a platform for talented Malaysians to take up the challenge of coming up with innovative solutions to problems posed by Science, Technology and Engineering based companies or global issues such as socio-economic problem on health, sustainable energy, natural disaster etc.

Since the date of its inception, TGL has garnered support from various E&E companies, government & state agencies, private entities, universities and high schools.

To-date, there are more than 60 industry problem statements under the TGL platform, from various disciplines and domain areas such as:

a. Embedded System & IoT,

b. IC Design & Test Validation,

c. Opto-electronics, LED and Solid State Lighting

d. Advance Materials & Packaging

f. World-Class Electronics Manufacturing

g. Drones, Driverless & Autonomous Vehicle

THE GREAT LAB (TGL) PROJECT SEED FUND FOR IMDC 2021

• Application for the TGL Project Seed Fund for IMDC 2021 is ONLY open to participating teams that has applied to participate in Innovate Malaysia Design Competition 2021 and has been shortlisted under CREST Design Challenge track.

• Team members must consist of 1 to 3 undergraduate students (final and/or third year) per project and are currently studying in a public/private university in Malaysia.

• Subject to a formal application for the TGL Project Seed Fund by the team and successfully completed an interview with CREST panel, a project funding of RM1500 (for project materials only) will be awarded to the successful teams.

• The award of the project fund is with the agreement that the team is required to utilize the fund to complete a design project based on the approved proposal/application to IMDC 2021 & CREST AND present their completed project to CREST judges during the Finale of IMDC 2021.

• The project must be conducted according to the timeline of IMDC 2021.

• The project scope must be deemed relevant to the given 3 challenges statements under IMDC 2021 CREST Design Challenge track. The 3 CREST challenge statements consist of the Smart Cities, Precision Farming and Digital Healthcare categories.

• The agreement for this project funding is between CREST and the team only. Thus, the project funding will be disbursed directly to the team's Project Leader (student).

• Full terms and conditions of the project funding will be stated in the TGL Project Seed Fund Agreement.

APPLICATION GUIDELINE

1) The TGL Project Seed Fund Application Form (Section A to Section D of your Project Information):

• Section A - Title of Proposed Project
• Section B - Executive Summary of Project Proposal
• Section C - Detailed Proposal of Project
• Section D - Bill of Materials and Budget

2) Detailed Project Proposal

3) Resumes (for all team members)

4) Copy of University Student ID Matrix Card (for all team members)

5) CREST PDPA Consent form (which had been signed by every team members)
